Tips on Metal Detecting in the Rain

The winter has passed, spring is on its way, and along with it comes the spring rains. You and your favorite metal detector have been waiting for the snow and the ice to melt to give way to sunshine and excellent weather that's fit for your favorite hobby - unfortunately, the perfect spring weather isn't exactly perfect, as it also brings about rain showers every now and then.

The good news is that you can still go metal detecting in the rain. Here are some tips about how you can do exactly that, and be effective in the process.

When metal detecting in the rain your metal detector will need protection. You should also purchase a commercial meter rain-cover. This is to ensure that your metal detector won't get soaked from the rain. Sometimes, however, the problem with commercial rain-covers is that they tend to get moist from inside, so it is difficult to read the meter.

It is also an added expense, obviously. So if you do not want to shell out cash to purchase a commercial meter rain-cover you can opt to use ordinary plastic grocery bags. It may not be as secure and will not give the same protection as a commercial rain-cover, but it's good enough to let you go on with your metal detecting even in the rain.

As much as you need protection from the rain for your metal detector, you also need protection from the cold wind and the rain showers yourself. Purchase a wetsuit which will keep you from getting soaked, helping you stay warm and cozy. It is also ideal to bring a raincoat other than your wetsuit, to keep the chill from penetrating - especially when it is windy.

With regard to metal detector headphones, waterproof headphones are best, but regular headphones work as well.

The best thing about going on metal detecting trips in the rain is that common metal detecting hot spots are usually empty during a rain shower. You will have the whole area all to yourself, minus the nosey tourists and other metal detecting enthusiasts. Also, because the ground is soaked during the rain, the metal detector is able to pick up on signals in deeper targets, allowing you to dig in deeper holes.

So don't let a little rain keep you from the chance to discover valuable finds with your metal detector, because metal detecting in the rain is totally possible, and can be really fun too!
