It is really solely up to you if you really want to do it alone or with a companion who shares the same interest. Determine what will work best for you when metal detecting. Here is a list of the perks and disadvantages of being alone or being with a group.

What are the perks of doing it on your own?
-     You get to retain everything you see and pick. It's all yours. If you struck gold then you have the entire treasure.
-     You can do your thing. This is good for people who hate being told what to. You will have your own time and do whatever you want.
-     Your own pace. You can do everything swiftly or you can do it at a snails pace to check every nook and cranny.
-     You are the boss. You control everything there is.
-     When you get tired you can rest and not have to worry about another member complaining that they are doing all the work.

What are the disadvantages of choosing to be alone?
-     You have no one to talk to (unless you have a knack in talking to yourself).
-     You can't scan a big place quickly.
-     You have no one to depend on when you get tired.
-     You have no fun.
-     You are the only one that people will look at curiously.

What are the perks of doing it with other people?
-     It's fun because you get to chat and amuse yourself with other members of the group.
-     It is faster since you won't be the only one scanning the place.
-     It will be done in a more orderly and systematic method.
-     You won't be the only one people will stare at weirdly.
-     When you get tired you have other people to depend on.

What are the disadvantages of joining a group?
-     Some people are difficult to work with
-     It takes time before you can actually get started due to so much chatting.
-     You have limited treasure potential items to gain.
-     You have limited space to search because you will not be the only one to scan the place.
-     You can't scan a big place quickly because you have other people who might be positioned to search there.
